Abstract

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), defined as 'behaviors in intimate relationships that cause physical, sexual, or psychological harm to the victim', is a persistent social issue that requires a deeper understanding of the factors influencing moral judgments surrounding such behaviors. This research project aims to investigate three distinct types of moral judgments (evaluation, norm judgment, and wrongness judgment) concerning IPV perpetuated against women, as well as their respective impacts on attitudes towards IPV. Data will be collected in Brazil and the United States. Participants in both countries will evaluate situations of IPV by indicating their perceptions of how good/bad (group 1), acceptable/not acceptable (group 2), or right/wrong (group 3) these aggressions are. Participants will also self-report their support for the aggressions, the penalties they believe should be attributed to the aggressor, and the likelihood of reporting the aggressor. Through regression analysis, we will explore how demographic factors such as country of origin, gender, age, ethnicity, and wealth influence differences between the groups in their responses.
