Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze contemporary audiovisual representations of the peripheral territories of Paris, more specifically Seine-Saint-Denis, based on short films produced by young directors who live on the peripheries of the city. Through a possible dialog with the peripheral productions of São Paulo, this study seeks recurring thematic between the two groups, as well as understanding their contextual and cultural differences in circulation. Our corpus is made up of productions by students from the Kourtrajmé audiovisual school, located in Montfermeil (Seine-Saint-Denis, France), and collectives and associations from the peripheries of the French capital. More broadly, we seek to understand the permanent conflicts in representations between physical and symbolic territories. In this sense, we are interested in reflecting on the right to the city, but also cultural objects and the way in which they are socially elaborated, specifically audiovisual objects, in debates on race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, origin and social class.
