Abstract

The present proposal for a Research Internship (BEPE) aims to enable the acquisition of essential data to achieve the objectives established in the project currently under development "Paleoceanographic changes in the Brazilian S/SE continental margin during the Last Glacial Cycle: A multiproxy approach" (FAPESP process nº. 2024/02937-4), as well as to provide new training experiences for the scholarship holder, seeking the training of excellence in human resources. The period of the proposed research internship is 9 (nine) months, to be carried out at the Center for Marine Sciences (CCMAR - Algarve) in partnership with the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA - Lisbon/Portugal), under the supervision of Dr. Emília Salgueiro. During the internship, data will be obtained on the elemental chemical composition of planktonic and benthic foraminifera samples obtained from a sediment core (780 - 25º3"S, 44º24"W, 1469m deep) collected on the S/SE margin of Brazil. The element/Ca ratio data will be converted to paleotemperature, allowing the evaluation of changes in the temperature of surface and intermediate waters of the study area over the last 25 thousand years. The internship will also enable the scholarship holder to acquire new skills and competencies in the preparation and analysis of samples aimed at obtaining elemental ratios in planktonic and benthic foraminifera samples, in addition to enabling the performance of an intercalibration and validation of methods between the trace element analysis laboratories of IPMA and the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo (IO/USP). In addition to representing an initial collaboration of the IOUSP research group with Dr. Emília Salgueiro from the Center for Marine Sciences - Oceanography and Climate Change Group (CCMAR - OC2) and the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere - Division of Geology and Marine Resources (IPMA-DivGM) in Portugal within the scope of the thematic project "The Santos Bifurcation: present and past - SANBIF" (FAPESP process no. 20/14356-5).
