Abstract

Introduction. Hospitalization can represent one of the child's first stressful experiences, with evidence of immediate and long-term repercussions, a context in which playful interventions have been described as a care strategy. It is questioned whether storytelling by the child and through the use of a playful box can consist of a strategy that offers elements to contribute to planning care and assisting the child in coping with hospitalization. Objective. To analyze the themes of stories told by hospitalized children using a playful box. Method. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, based on the theoretical framework of Winnicott, to be conducted in the Clinical Pediatrics Unit of a university hospital in São Paulo. School-age children will be invited to participate, with an estimated participation of 20 children. In addition to characterization data, an analysis of the story narrated by the child based on the objects identified in the box will be conducted. With parental agreement and the child's assent, the playful box will be made available for the child to handle the objects and proceed with storytelling. The session will be recorded using a mobile device, with measures adopted for safe storage of the material and preservation of the participant's anonymity. The stories will be transcribed in full and analyzed according to the methodological framework of Thematic Analysis. At all stages, the determinations of Resolution 466/12 of the National Health Council will be complied with.
