Abstract

Behavioral flexibility, the ability to quickly adapt behavior to changes in the environment, has crucial implications in neurological and psychiatric conditions. Investigating the neural bases of this flexibility aims to advance the understanding of these conditions and propose new perspectives for therapeutic interventions. The set-shifting task is a fundamental tool for studying behavioral flexibility, exploring the ability to adjust behavior in response to constantly changing stimuli. Serotonin plays an important role in behavioral flexibility. Among the various serotonergic receptors, the 5-HT2C receptors have received particular attention due to their role in memory and neural plasticity. Meta-chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP), a non-selective serotonergic agonist with significant action on 5-HT2C receptors, has been widely used in neurobiological research. However, the influence of mCPP on the set-shifting task is still unknown. Thus, this research addresses the effects of different doses of mCPP (0; 0.5; 1; 2 mg/kg) on behavioral flexibility in adult male and female Wistar rats, employing a set-shifting task in an operant conditioning box. The study aims to understand if there are significant differences in behavioral flexibility between male and female rats and how sex modulates responses to mCPP. It is expected that mCPP will impair behavioral flexibility in the set-shifting task with sex-dependent results.
