Abstract

This project is dedicated to the study "A Voice from the South by a Black Woman of the South" (1892) by Anna Julia Cooper (1858-1964). Privileging a sociological perspective, this study focuses on the notion of justice, a recurring theme in the author's work and trajectory. The cross-analysis, used by Cooper as a method of analyzing society, already indicates that the justice advocated by the author was based on the broader principles of American law and democracy. This research investigates whether Cooper's religious upbringing may have influenced her notions of justice and a just society. To answer the proposed questions, the research intends to explore and systematize such notions in the author's thought, developing the hypothesis that the concept of justice would be forged in the amalgamation between law and religion.
