GLIM IN PATIENTS ON HEMODIALYSIS: AN OPERATIONAL METHOD FOR MALNUTRITION DIAGNOSIS

Abstract

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of malnutrition, which is multicausal and different terminologies can be found to define this condition. In this context, an international initiative was created and named as Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM), aiming to reach a global consensus to diagnose malnutrition. Therefore, the objective of this project is to evaluate the prevalence of malnutrition in hemodialysis patients using GLIM. This is a multicenter study with adult individuals with CKD on hemodialysis. Demographic, social, clinical, laboratory and nutritional data will be used from the baseline assessment and after one year of follow-up. Clinical events, such as hospitalizations and deaths, will be identified from the moment of inclusion until twelve months after the last evaluation with twenty-four months of follow-up. For the diagnosis of malnutrition using GLIM, at least one of the three phenotypic criteria will be considered (non-volitional weight loss, low body mass index and/or low muscle mass, by three different methods: calf circumference, muscle mass index by bioimpedance and adequacy of arm muscle circumference), and for the etiological criteria two conditions will be tested: disease burden, considering that all patients are on dialysis and C-reactive protein values.
