Abstract

The main objective of this research project is to analyze the use of mathematics by small rural farmers regarding the calculation of land areas, who use the traditional cubation method, its nuances and repercussions on issues involving social justice in the field of metrology. Parallel to this, reflect on social and cultural practices; analyze the historiographies that deal with the context of the development of metrology, in particular, referring to the land cubation process. The research will be carried out with rural farmers from Quilombo Riacho dos Negros, located in the municipality of São João do Piauí. We will use a qualitative approach and to collect data we will use semi-structured interviews, participant observation and conversation circles. We start from the following guiding questions: within the scope of family farming, how do rural farmers in Quilombo Riacho dos Negros deal with the use of mathematics required by day-to-day life in preparing the land and managing cultivated crops, as well as in cubing tasks? of land areas? Furthermore, how do actors who use this traditional measurement method observe issues that reverberate in the field of social justice? Therefore, as a result of the research, we intend to understand and work with the aforementioned issues, so that the traditional metrological knowledge of small farmers is known and valued, but also meets the principles of social justice.
