Abstract

This project aims to analyze how the worlds of work are depicted and perceived in the chronicles written between 1904 and 1907 by the Rio de Janeiro journalist João do Rio (1881-1921), which constitute the work "A alma encantadora das ruas" (1908). To this end, we resort to a bibliography that dialogues with the author's own subjective dimension, the context of the primary source's production - namely, the city of Rio de Janeiro in the early 20th century - and the use of chronicles as a genre capable of revealing, for historiographical studies, issues that challenge "the grand modes of critical observation" (CHALHOUB; NEVES; PEREIRA, 2005, p. 20). In summary, it is about considering how the diversity in living and working conditions, social relations and conflicts, and forms of organization of these workers exists and are understood by João do Rio, a chronicler who directly engages with the issues of his time.
