Abstract

The present project aims to develop research focused on analyzing the periphery, historically stigmatized by poverty and the lack of infrastructure, equipment, and urban services. This view is being challenged by new perspectives, which contest the trend of territorial stigma. A plural understanding of the peripheries reveals diverse spatial and temporal dynamics in the interpretation of the meaning of urban periphery and what it means to be peripheral. Focusing on the Núcleo Bartholomeu Bueno de Miranda in Presidente Prudente - SP, this study highlights its transition from a stigmatized territory to a neighborhood with a dynamic subcenter in the city. The objective is to contribute to a plural perspective of urban dynamics, promoting an interpretation that can help understand a space marked by numerous transformations. A critical review of conventional approaches is proposed, recognizing territorial stigma as a dynamic process that profoundly influences the urban experiences of city dwellers. The research aims to analyze different generations that have lived in the housing development, using interviews and newspaper studies to enrich the understanding of the process. Thus, by exploring the underlying reasons for the social division of space and the mechanisms that perpetuate the dynamics of territorial stigma, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexity that characterizes contemporary urban space.
