Data analysis using Machine Learning in the prognosis of oncologic pacients

Abstract

This cientific initiation project will focus on data analysis aiming the improvement of the prognosis of gastric and colon cancer pacients using Machine Learning tools. It is expected to integrate informations of clinical data with computed tomography image data of gastric and colon pacients admitted to Hospital de Clínicas da Unicamp. The Experimental Hadronic Physics group (HadrEx/Unicamp), which this project is part of, published in the last year, in collaboration with the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Unicamp (FCM/Unicamp), an article on the journal Informatics in Medicine Unlocked that showed the effectiveness of incorporating computational methods of Machine Learning in the data analysis of gastric cancer pacients to improve their prognosis using data from pacients that suffered with stage II and stage III cancer. Therefore, besides deepening the knowledge of the student in concepts of data analysis applied to medicine, one of the goals of this project is to continue the work cited with the inclusion of new pacients (i.e. pacients with stage I and stage IV cancer) and extend the study to pacients with colon cancer, which has not been done yet.
