Abstract

The present project aims to continue the Direct Doctorate project, developed with financial support from FAPESP (under grant number 2022/02609-1), linked to the thematic project "São Paulo Metropolitan Area: Integrated Approach to Climate Change and Air Quality, Metroclima - MASP" (grant number 2016/18438-0), which is scheduled to conclude on January 31, 2025. This study seeks to understand the concentration patterns of carbon dioxide (CO¿) and other greenhouse gases in the Metropolitan Area of Sao Paulo (MASP), considering the scenario of increasing air pollution and climate change. The research addresses both local emissions (from vehicles, industries, and other urban sources) and the intrusion of CO¿ originating from wildfires in the Cerrado, Amazon, and Pantanal, transported over long distances. To achieve this, it utilizes satellite data such as OCO-2, OCO-3, and GOSAT, in addition to atmospheric transport models that enable the monitoring and analysis of CO¿ variability at high resolution. Radiative transfer modeling techniques will also be applied to estimate the radiative impacts of these emissions. This approach aims to understand the role of wildfires, local vegetation, and anthropogenic activities in CO¿ concentrations and evaluate the climatic impacts on the MASP.
