Abstract

Guido de Colonna, in the Historia destructionis Troiae (1287), translated into Latin and adapted the meridional version (or Prose 2) of Benoît de Sainte-Maure's Roman de Troie. The impact of the Latin work on Iberian literature has been documented since the 14th century, through recasts in Castilian, Catalan, Aragonese and Portuguese. This project proposes to investigate the peninsular transmission of Guido's narrative from the 14th to 16th centuries. To this end, we will study the rhetorical-poetic modifications resulting from its translations and adaptations, considering the different historical, political and geographical contexts in which they emerged. This research will be based, primarily, on the treatises of the time, as well as on other theoretical discourses of the period on the processes of translation, gloss and interpretation of auctores. Furthermore, a critical edition of the Castilian translation of the Historia destructionis Troiae - produced at the end of the 14th century, possibly in the literate circle of Pero López de Ayala - will be developed. The edition will be based on the first thirteen books of the translation (and part of the fourteenth), which are witnessed together with a copy of the Historia troyana polimétrica and the Alfonso XI's Crónica troyana (Royal Library of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial ms. L-II-16, fols. 1r-74v) and its extensive fragments present in the Crónica troyana printed by Juan de Burgos (Biblioteca Nacional de Lisboa inc. 113). It is intended to follow the philological principles and editing criteria of Borja (1998; 2011).
