Abstract

Studies that aim at the vibration control of structural oscillations have marked importance in engineering design. Projects focused on passive suppression of vibrations are receiving efforts from the scientific community. In this context, the present research project focuses on the development of systems for nonlinear passive control of vibrations using nonlinear energy sinks (NESs) for shear buildings and towers, among other structural systems. The loads to be considered will be defined during the project and may include unbalanced machines, seismic excitation, free surface waves, wind and currents. The development of systems for passive control will follow a methodology based on numerical, analytical and experimental studies. This methodology will allow both a better understanding of the nonlinear dynamics and the validation of the device in laboratory scale. This project is linked to two initiative supported by FAPESP. The first one is a project coordinated by the supervisor. The second one is a Thematic Project whose focus is on the application of nonlinear dynamics to engineering systems. This project will also present cooperation with an Italian group. At the end of the project, methodologies for the design of passive control systems will be obtained together with small-scaled laboratory experiments. In addition patent applications may result from this project.
