Abstract

In the postprandial period, an array of physiological adaptations tonutrient intake take place to adjust metabolism for the newly available energysubstrates and other components of the meal. During this phase, fluctuations incirculating levels of signaling messengers and metabolites, including lipoproteinsand bile acids (BA), play a key role in energy homeostasis and immunemodulation. While lipoproteins are essential for lipid transport and newphysiological roles are being attributed to them, the regulation of their metabolismby BA remains elusive, despite new evidence that indicate key roles for BA in theregulation of postprandial lipid metabolism. Given the regulatory role of BA in lipidmetabolism, understanding their influence on postprandial lipoprotein dynamicsis crucial for better understanding their effects on metabolism. This study aims tocharacterize postprandial lipoprotein profiles in an animal model that has beencharacterized by our group to investigate postprandial BA signaling ininflammation and energy metabolism. Using Sprague-Dawley rats challengedwith a high-energy meal with or without an acute dosis of cholic acid, we proposethe evaluation of postprandial lipoprotein profiles via NMR. This study is plannedto be carried out in partnership with Prof. Lorraine Brennan, at the UniversityCollege Dublin, during a 4-month internship of the applicant. The findings fromthis study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship betweenBA and lipid metabolism in the postprandial period, with great relevance toongoing projects funded by FAPESP.
