Abstract

Missing teeth and bone loss present a challenge for dentistry. As a result, the use of alternative therapies has shown promise, such as the combination of ozone therapy and barrier membranes. The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential benefits of ozone therapy when applied in conjunction with a biodegradable membrane in critical defects in the calvaria of young rats during the guided bone regeneration process. A total of 96 male Wistar rats will be divided into 4 groups: Group COA (negative control), which will only have the clot to fill the critical defect; Group COA+OZ, where, in addition to the clot, the animals will receive intraperitoneal ozone therapy; Group COLHAP, where a collagen membrane will be used to cover the critical defect; and Group COLHAP+OZ, which will receive the membrane to cover the critical defect along with the ozone therapy protocol. The critical defect created in the animals' calvaria using a trephine will have a diameter of 8 mm. The COA+OZ and COLHAP+OZ groups will receive ozone application via intraperitoneal injection at a dosage of 0.7 ml/kg of the animal, every two days, starting immediately after surgery. The animals will undergo euthanasia after periods of 7, 15, 30, and 60 days. The specimens will be analyzed for residual defect linear extent, inflammatory profile, and quantitative analysis of new bone formation in the defect area. After analyzing the results obtained, the best statistical test will be applied with a confidence level of p<0.05.
