Abstract

This project addresses the Split Delivery Vehicle Routing Problem with Stochastic Demands (SDVRP-S). This problem involves the planning of optimal routes to fulfill a set of customers, assuming their demands are uncertain and only realized at the moment a vehicle arrives at the customer. Because split deliveries are allowed, a customer can be served by more than one vehicle, which is not the case in traditional variants of the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP). While this problem is an extension of two well-known variants of the VRP and is highly relevant in terms of practical applications, the literature of the SDVRP-S is scarce, and to this day, neither formulations nor exact methods were proposed for this problem. The extension of existing methods and formulations for the SDVRP-S is not straightforward, since the variation in the demand of a customer may affect multiple routes at once. This project will contribute to the literature by introducing novel recourse policies, formulations and exact methods for the SDVRP-S, and will complement the current post-doctorate project by applying its main concepts on a related problem. The internship will be carried at Erasmus University Rotterdam (The Netherlands) under supervision of Professor Remy Spliet, from the Erasmus School of Economics, who has expertise in topics related to the research, including exact methods for the VRP with Stochastic Demands.
