Abstract

This research project aims to deepen the use of the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique in the analysis of deformations in mechanical tests, with a focus on applications that require greater detail compared to traditional two-point extensometry in materials under load. The DIC technique enables non-contact deformation monitoring and can be used in 2D and 3D analyses to capture surface displacements through images. The study will be developed in three main stages: (1) an in-depth investigation of the variability of experimental parameters and the algorithm to reduce errors and increase the reproducibility of 2D analyses; (2) a comparative evaluation of open-source and commercial software algorithms (2D-ALDIC and VIC-2D), focusing on the analysis of experimental errors; (3) a comparison between 2D and 3D techniques using a stereoscopic camera arrangement to overcome the limitations of two-dimensional analysis, especially in cases with out-of-plane displacement. This study will be conducted under the supervision of Prof. Garrison Hommer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, an institution where the DIC technique is applied under various experimental conditions, providing valuable experience and data for fine-tuning and calibrating the algorithms. The internship abroad aims to enhance the practical application of DIC and promote knowledge transfer to Brazil.
