Abstract

This project is invested in analysing the woman artist in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848), by Anne Brontë, as a character confronted with the conflicting claims of professionalization and patriarchy. We intend to discuss how Helen Graham, the novel's protagonist, simultaneously adhere and flout Victorian expectations on femininity, whilst expanding and subverting nineteenth-century conventions and possibilities of Künstlerromaner (artist novels).
