Abstract

By reconstructing the trajectories of two groups of artists who began their careers in São Paulo in the early 1980s, this master's research aims to understand the state of the São Paulo artistic field in the 1980s. By investigating the individual and collective trajectories of the artists in the Casa 7 and FAAP groups, the research aims to understand the transformations taking place in this field in the 1980s. The first group composed by Carlito Carvalhosa (1961 - 2021), Fábio Miguez (1962), Nuno Ramos (1960), Paulo Monteiro (1961) and Rodrigo Andrade (1962), five male artists from São Paulo, and the second formed by the artists gathered on the exhibition "Pintura como meio" (Painting as a medium), the two women artists, Ana Maria Tavares (1958) and Leda Catunda (1961), and three men, Ciro Cozzolino (1959), Sergio Romagnolo (1957) and Sergio Niculitcheff (1960). The literature shows that, at the same time as these artistic trajectories began, contemporary art galleries were being consolidated in the country, indicating the emergence of a structure in the artistic field in which the art market is becoming increasingly central. Despite the significant development of the sociology of Brazilian art, few studies have analyzed contemporary visual arts from a sociological perspective. Therefore, by carrying out this research it will be possible to contribute to understanding the social dynamics of contemporary Brazilian art production.
