Abstract

Considering that the objectives of the internship project and the project developed in the home country fully coincide, this internship proposal aims to develop and deepen the ongoing work, which consists of a commented translation of the first two books that make up Treatise on Harmony Reduced to Its Natural Principles (1722) by the French theorist, philosopher, and composer Jean-Philippe Rameau, as well as an interdisciplinary study of the work and the drafting of the translation's preface. Comprising four books, the first two establish the mathematical and logical foundations upon which the first great theorist of the triadic period and the architect of the tonal system built his theoretical-philosophical work. Deeply rooted in French musical and philosophical culture, aspiring to elevate music to the status of art (which classical aesthetics had until then denied it) and, in parallel with art, to establish it as a science, this work cannot be dissociated from its intrinsically philosophical dimension without a substantial loss in understanding its impact on music. For these reasons, the internship at UFR Humanités et sciences sociales (HSS-UNICAEN), under the co-supervision of Professor Maud Pouradier, a specialist in the philosophy of art and aesthetics, will provide an essential contribution to the development of a genuinely philosophical investigation of the work. Furthermore, the university's rich infrastructure, easy access to an extensive and up-to-date secondary bibliography, as well as proximity to primary sources and familiarity with the French academic and cultural environment will constitute significantly enriching aspects for the research.
