Abstract

The research aims to analyze the correlation between cultural heritage protection and urban planning, beyond the Brazilian context. In Brazil, the master's research focuses on one of the first experiences of urban heritage protection, developed for the port region of the city of Rio de Janeiro during the 1980s, known as the Sagas Project. This project is significant in both local and national contexts, among other aspects, due to the active participation of the community in the fight for urban preservation and for promoting cultural heritage protection through traditional urban planning and land-use regulation instruments and policies. The four-month internship at the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Seville (Department of Urban Planning and Land Management) will represent an opportunity for the grantee to explore how preservation and urban planning are interconnected in the city of Seville, through bibliographic research and the collection and analysis of legal frameworks developed and implemented in the territory over the past decades. In this sense, analyzing both cases from a comparative perspective will provide a different lens to understand how the urban heritage preservation legislation of Rio de Janeiro fits into an ongoing international process, while also representing an innovative approach, since there are currently no studies that address these subjects and contexts simultaneously.
