Abstract

Differences between sexes or between men and women in responses to exercise are important factors to consider for athletic performance, both for high-performance training and for health purposes. The aim of this study is to investigate and compare the physiological responses induced by incremental tests performed on a treadmill at different inclines in men and women trained in running. Fifteen men and fifteen women, aged between 20 and 45 years, will participate in the study and will be divided into two groups. Both groups will perform four experimental sessions in total: 1) Familiarization with the experimental procedures of the study and anthropometry; 2) Progressive test on the treadmill, on a level; 3) Progressive test on the treadmill, on an incline; 4) Progressive test on the treadmill, on a decline. The following variables will be determined: maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max), speed corresponding to VO2max, ventilatory threshold (VT), respiratory compensation point (RCP), heart rate (HR) and subjective perception of exertion (SPE). Data will be expressed as mean ± SD. Their normality will be verified using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Variables will be compared using Two-way ANOVA, with post-hoc Bonferroni. The comparison of the results of men and women will be performed using Student's t-test for unpaired data. Correlation between study variables will be performed using Pearson's correlation test. The significance level adopted will be p ¿ 0.05. (AU)
