Abstract

Thermally isolated systems are a highly idealized situation. Nevertheless, they are a theoretical setup that helps to (i) introduce the fundamental laws and symmetries that we believe to be ultimately valid and (ii) derive predictions for a part of the isolated system without relying on assumptions of weak coupling between this part and the rest. The aim of this proposal is to complement the main project by introducing the effects of coarse graining to the entropy production quantifiers already tackled by the student for thermally isolated systems. That will naturally lead to results that might describe the entropy production of subsystems at strong coupling with their environments. However, a previous step is the confirmation of the quantities used as thermodynamic valid quantifiers of the entropy production in thermally isolated systems. This has been partially achieved in the main project (more details are shown here) but still requires the derivation of fluctuation theorems for the stochastic version of such quantifiers. To accomplish the two steps just mentioned, namely, entropy production quantifiers under coarse graining and fluctuation theorems for thermally isolated systems, we submit this internship proposal as a visit to two experts on these topics.
