Abstract

The main objective is to understand part of the experience of the articulation of indigenous peoples between the 1970s and 1980s, a moment that marks the emergence of the organized indigenous social movement, permeating the context of the Brazilian Military Dictatorship, the period of redemocratization, with emphasis on the Constituent Assembly in 1987. Based on the Luta Indígena report, the purpose is to look at the actions, the main demands, how political practices were organized and how the various ethnic groups that took part in this initial phase of the Indigenous Movement's formation were articulated. Through the thematic section and the historiographical sources selected, it was decided to understand this organization, allied in principle to the Conselho Indigenista Missionário (Cimi) in its work in the southern region. The research is based on a theoretical framework that sees the organization of a group as a social movement as given in political practices, so we also attempt to understand the occurrence of a process of making of the Indigenous Movement. For this purpose, the central sources are the press allied to the indigenous cause, which also includes the protagonism of indigenous leaders in its formulation. The choice of this material is based on the understanding that communication is essential to the articulation of indigenous peoples as a social movement, linking territories, knowledge and practices.
