Abstract

The growing demand for lithium-ion batteries has driven the need to efficiently recycle critical metals such as cobalt (Co), aiming to reduce dependence on mining and its associated environmental and social impacts. This project proposes an innovative method for the selective recovery of Co from spent batteries using deep eutectic solvents (DES) assisted by microwave and ultrasound. Combining these technologies seeks to optimize extraction efficiency while minimizing the use of harsh reagents and promoting a more sustainable process. The project will be conducted at BAM, in Berlin, where the state-of-the-art infrastructure will allow advanced characterization of the recovered materials, ensuring validation of the proposed method. This research stay will enable the deepening of competencies in sustainable hydrometallurgical processes and strengthen scientific collaboration with the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), expanding the applicant's international research network and contributing to the development of greener industrial recycling practices and the advancement of the circular economy in battery recycling.
