Abstract

This project aims to investigate the relationship between microstructure and wear resistance of the Al-5%Mg-0.4%Sc alloy, processed through different solidification routes and heat treatments. This alloy is considered promising for structural applications in the aerospace and automotive industries due to its high specific strength, low density, and good corrosion resistance. The addition of scandium promotes grain refinement and the formation of the Al3Sc phase, which significantly enhances mechanical properties and thermal stability. The study will compare samples produced by conventional directional solidification and those through laser remelting, followed by direct artificial aging. Microstructures will be characterized using optical and electron microscopy, phase analysis, microhardness testing, and wear resistance evaluation. The project is part of an ongoing FAPESP-funded initiative and is supported by well-established infrastructure. The scholarship holder will receive training in experimental techniques, data analysis, and scientific writing, contributing to his academic development.
