Abstract

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by the accumulation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, leading to progressive neuronal loss and cognitive impairment. Advances in the use of biomarkers have allowed more accurate diagnoses, making it possible to identify the disease early. At the same time, body composition, especially the relationship between muscle mass and adipose tissue, has been associated with cognitive decline, suggesting a connection between metabolism and neurodegeneration. This study aims to investigate whether there is a correlation between body composition and the presence of neurodegeneration biomarkers in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid. To this end, individuals with and without cognitive impairment will be investigated for plasma and cerebrospinal fluid biomarker concentrations and for muscle mass and body fat, using electrical bioimpedance. The results may contribute to the understanding of the metabolic mechanisms involved in AD and help identify new body profiles at risk for cognitive decline, as well as guide counseling for lifestyle changes to maintain neuropsychological health.
