Abstract

There are many devices that establish kinetic organizations structuring gestures in the school routine: walls and bars that define the boundaries of movement, sound signals indicating actions and the time in which they should be performed, the arrangement of lines for walks between different spaces, and, most notably, chairs designed for sitting and staying seated based on specific postural references. These spatial-temporal relationships between gestures, bodily actions, and movements create a choreography for the school. Based on this expanded notion of choreography, this research project aims to observe and engage with the school's choreographies, collecting mobile experiences that (re)invent and choreograph its daily life, challenging the limits of control and discipline. With a theoretical-practical approach, the research combines reading selected literature with practical activities at the Etec de Artes and Parque da Juventude schools. Since 2008, these institutions have shared the same pillars, floors, and walls of the São Paulo Detention House - popularly known as Carandiru - which was the site of one of the largest massacres in Brazil's prison history. Throughout that, the project intends to create a card-based mediation game for performative experiences in these schools, investigating the space and fostering the emergence of other possible gestures and choreographies with two groups of students from these institutions. This research project is significant as it mobilizes practice in various formats to develop new forms of investigative exercise, reinforcing practice as a fundamental pillar for researching dance through the moving body in the school setting.
