Abstract

This proposal aims to develop a digital platform, the Traditional Knowledge Registration and Validation Platform of the Amazon Associated with Biodiversity (PCTAB), operationalized through mobile devices and created via co-creation workshops held in nine communities across three states of the Legal Amazon: Pará, Amazonas, and Maranhão. Traditional Amazonian communities and researchers will interact in workshops to record and catalogue traditional knowledge associated with the biodiversity of traditional territories using Artificial Intelligence. The co-creation strategy combined with the digital platform will enable the scientific validation of traditional knowledge related to biodiversity. The main objective of this proposal is for this digital tool to record and scientifically validate practices and traditional knowledge associated with biodiversity by linking globally available scientific databases with images collected in the communities accessed by the project. The records made by traditional peoples and communities will be associated with information from the Brazilian Biodiversity Information System (SiBBR) archives. SiBBR is an online platform that integrates data and information on biodiversity and ecosystems from various sources, making them accessible for diverse uses (SiBBR, 2024). The co-creation strategy will also enable the platform, regularly updated, to serve as a monitoring tool for traditional populations to oversee biodiversity in their territories. Additionally, the platform will function as an instrument that can be activated in disputes involving these social groups and market actors who enter their biodiversity-rich territories in a predatory manner. The recognition and validation of traditional knowledge associated with biodiversity in Amazonian territories are crucial for developing institutional strategies that ensure the continuity of conservation practices by traditional peoples and communities, thus complying with the provisions set out in Article 8 of the Convention on Biological Diversity, especially regarding legal disputes established between market agents and Amazonian traditional peoples and communities.
