Abstract

This research aims to answer what are the main operational capabilities required to run ecomes? Given the limited primary data and theoretical understanding of this phenomenon, this research will be conducted by employing a qualitative-quantitative research methodology. More specifically, this research will build on these two methodologies to address the research question under investigation. The first stage of this research is a qualitative interview with managers to get a fuller understanding of the phenomenon. The interview protocol will be established by using the previous literature and will be based on capturing the events, actions, and decisions (Langley and Meziani, 2020). This first stage will allow the identification of the initial constructs to be further explored in the quantitative stage. These constructs will be transformed into a scale to measure them in a survey (e.g., Groves et al., 2011). Coding (e.g., Straus and Corbin, 1998) will be used to capture the most relevant constructs and build a preliminary framework that provides initial clues to our research question. The researchers will transform the results from the qualitative study into measurable constructs. This process will be systematic and follow steps to enhance reliability: 1) generating an initial set of constructs and items; 2) peer review of the set of items and constructs; 3) performing an initial survey to test the items with real respondents; 4) defining the final scale. Data will be collected using an online survey with ecosystem managers, innovation managers, CEO's, among other relevant respondents. Data will be analyzed following a structured protocol of performing an exploratory data analysis (e.g., Morgenthaler, 2009) establishing the reliability and validity of the instrument (e.g., Hair et al., 2009), and then performing the quantitative analysis.
