Abstract

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy is the most common form of difficult-to-treat focal epilepsy in adults, and hippocampal sclerosis is observed in most patients.Recently, it has been described that patients with type 2 sclerosis present with preserved memory; however, up to 25% of these patients have long-term memory deficits. Since the patterns of hippocampal sclerosis are defined according to the loss of principal neurons, the objective of this proposal will be to investigate whether the hippocampal density of parvalbumin-positive and calretinin-positive interneurons correlates with the mnemonic performance of patients with type 2 hippocampal sclerosis.
