Abstract

This project is linked to CRIAB, a group established at Unicamp with branches in several institutions across Latin America, where J. M. Martínez serves as the coordinator of the Mathematical Engineering Working Group. The core focus of this group's research is disasters associated with dams. To understand these phenomena, it is necessary to develop suitable mathematical models of watercourses and tailings. There are two extreme types of models: those based on consolidated physical laws and partial differential equations, and empirical models based on data. Between these extremes lies a wide variety of "semi-empirical" models. All of these models require parameter calibration, and this is where Optimization plays a fundamental role. The student supervised in this project is from the Amazon region, where modeling large river basins poses a significant challenge. This project proposes to study the current laws and techniques that underpin the various types of models and to apply them to one or more real cases in the Amazon region.
