Abstract

This project aims to valorize the solid residue from the enzymatic hydrolysis (SREH) of sugarcane bagasse pulp, generated at a pilot plant within a biorefinery concept, through its transformation into bioaerogels with thermal insulation and antimicrobial properties. This research is framed within the context of the circular economy by proposing the conversion of an abundant byproduct from the sugar-energy industry into high-value-added materials capable of replacing fossil-based alternatives, such as expanded polystyrene and polyurethane foams, which are known for their environmental impact. To achieve this, distinct bioaerogel production routes will be explored, employing techniques such as Lyophilization and Pickering Emulsion, in addition to investigating the influence of the residue's specific surface area on the structure and performance of the obtained material. The characterization of the resulting bioaerogels will encompass physicochemical, mechanical, thermal, flame retardancy, and antimicrobial efficacy, in order to identify optimized formulations with potential for industrial application. Thus, the project combines scientific innovation, sustainability, and technological relevance, aligning itself with national science and technology guidelines and contributing to the advancement of the production of advanced, biodegradable biomaterials in Brazil.
