Abstract

The three-month internship at the Royal College of Art (RCA) integrates the postdoctoral research Graphic design and creative dissent in Brazil, South Africa, and the United Kingdom (2025/03241-6), part of the international project Graphic Design Histories for Creative Dissent - Archiving and Ethical Challenges (2023/15265-1). The work focuses on archival research, design-led methodologies, and the study of protest graphics in the UK - in dialogue with Brazil and South Africa contexts. It aims to investigate principles of archiving from below, that challenge conventional institutional methods of gathering, shaping, and disseminating the history of struggles - and the role of graphic design plays in its tactics. Activities include in-depth investigations at UK community archives such as Anti Apartheid Movement Archives, MayDay Rooms and Bishopsgate Institute; supporting the development of case studies, data collection, papers, chapbook editions, and also contributing to the documentary film coordinated by the UK team. The internship also strengthens liaison with researchers, curators, and collaborators involved in the project's archival and methodological components. It also includes participation in RCA workshops, "In Conversation" events, and team meetings that enhance methodological training and ensure alignment with project outputs. The experience advances critical archival studies, visual analysis, and ethical approaches to collecting protest materials to write graphic design histories from a creative dissent perspective. Results from the internship will inform the Brazilian segment of the research, support contributions to collaborative academic publications, chapbooks editions, the project website, and also enable knowledge transfer through seminars, workshops, and academic dissemination upon return.
