Abstract

This project presents a proposal for research activities in the ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) experiment, placed in the beam line of the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) accelerator of the European Laboratory CERN (Centre Européenne pour la Recherches Nucléaires). The main goal of this experiment is to study nuclear matter in extreme conditions of temperature and energy density. The aim of this proposed work is to understand the production and dynamics of the heavy quarks c and b (charm and beauty, respectively) within the medium of extreme conditions created in sqrt (sNN)=5.5 TeV Pb+Pb collisions. This experiment setup allows the study of these quarks production and dynamics not only through measurements of their open states (D and B mesons), but also through quarkonium states measurements. Special attention will be devoted to the quark b due to its high production cross section in the new energy range reached by the LHC. (AU)
