Quality of life and impact of oral Health in elderly patients undergoing dental treatment in nursing education

Abstract

The approach of the dental patient has turned in recent years to a broad, holistic view of the patient and completeness of this service aimed at the welfare of the patient in terms of physical, psychological, and social, that is, its health in the real conception of the term. Subjective indicators of individual perception have been used increasingly in the evaluation of patients. This study has aimed at learning the ability of the OHIP-14 to distinguish between groups of elderly patients clinically distinct and compare the validity of a questionnaire with the general perception of health, the SF-36. For this, 160 elderly patients who required care in clinical teaching at the Faculty of Dentistry of Araraquara - UNESP will be studied. Two methods of analysis of the OHIP-14 will be used (simple counting method and additive), a score of the SF-36, comparing three different groups of patients (subjects with a history of complete denture wearing difficulties requesting implants, edentulous subjects requesting replacement of their complete dentures by conventional means and dentate subjects receiving routine dental care). The first two groups also respond to a questionnaire of satisfaction with their dentures. A pilot study will be conducted with 20 patients to verify the reproducibility of the OHIP-14 and SF-36 on two different occasions.(AU)
