Abstract

This work of Scientific Initiation aims to analyze an important composition by Anton Webern: Five Orchestral Pieces Op. 10. The musical work was composed in 1911, and in that date it had characteristics considered so innovative, that invite us to a deeper study of its compositional processes - such as: instrumentation, pitch class sets, rhythm, texture and timbre, dynamic, movement and form - used by Webern with intense musical meaning. The research will focus on more precise understanding about the above-mentioned aspects, so it will use tools applied to the musical analysis. A deeper understanding of twentieth century music is on basis of our desire. Thus, the main purpose of this work is to become a way for analysis, reflection and understanding of Webern's music, as well as to determine some association of this musical work with the musical language of twentieth century. The methodology considers interactions between perception, analysis and musical interpretation, thus Orchestral Pieces will be listened many times before the study of scores and, finally, the analysis. In the conclusion, an association between the object of the present work and aspects of twentieth century music, as well as the production of the composer, will be verified on basis of the developed analysis, considered material and compositional techniques.
