Abstract

The popularization of the Internet broadband access enhances the perspectives of exhaustion for the legacy optical fiber infrastructure. In this context, the research of mechanisms which increase the capacity and reach of wavelength division multitiplexing (WDM) based optical systems is a timely issue. This post-doctorate project approaches three essential topics related to very high capacity optical networks, where the transmission rate per channel can reach 100 Gb/s: Availability Analysis of Protected Lightpaths. Advanced Digital Modulation Formats for Optical Transmission. Mechanisms for Electronic Signal Processing. The study of the first topic concludes the research started by the candidate during his Ph.D. studies. The other two topics are in the framework of a research cooperation project between UNICAMP and the company Padtec S/A, with the participation of the IST Lisbon. They open new research fields for the candidate's research group. The project objective is to design a very high capacity optical system using advanced techniques for digital modulation and electronic signal processing. The system should represent the best trade-off among spectral efficiency, immunity to linear and nonlinear fiber effects and implementation complexity. The project realization comprises the computational and experimental system analysis using resources from the Kyatera project, and from the UNICAMP/Padtec cooperation. (AU)
