Abstract

Titanium and titanium alloys have been used routinely for biomedical applications. In practically all types of applications, in addition to biocompatibility, the mechanical properties are of great relevance, which justifies the use of new alloys or new processing techniques to optimize these properties. In this context, the present research project has the main objective to use severe plastic deformation (SPD) processing of titanium and titanium alloys to obtain refined microstructures and increased mechanical properties. The project involves: (a) the choice of alloys, (b) processing by two SPD techniques, high pressure torsion (HPT) and equal angular channel pressing (ECAP), (c) microstructural characterization by X ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning and transmission electron microscopy (MEV and MET) and (d) mechanical properties characterization using compression tests and microhardness measurements.
