Abstract

This work addresses the problem of analyzing the evolution of shape over time in certain biological systems. This is an important problem in the field of developmental biology and we wish to build on previous work in the group on related problems and apply some of these techniques to it. In particular, our research will initially focus on the geometrical characteristics of neurons and on the analysis of the changing shape of these cells. Using data at our disposal, our goal is to develop models for the geometrical evolution of these cells and then to provide verification of these models through extensive simulation. The considered approaches include the estimation of differential geometry measures such as normal and tangent field, and curvature, as well as variational and deconvolution models (possibly non-stationary in time and space).
