Abstract

Based on scientific evidence of the deleterious effects of noise on the development of newborns, the work of professionals and on the interaction of family members with the newborns and professionals, and of the high level of noise found in the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) and incubators, the objective of this project is to evaluate noise levels in a NICU before and after the introduction of an educational program to reduce noise. The study employs a quantitative quasi-experimental method, and was held in a public teaching hospital in the city of São Paulo. Neonatal ICU patients, the incubators, the health team and the family members of the newborns hospitalized in the ICU as well as the observers who will create the records with the software comprised the population and setting for the study. The SPL records were obtained with sound pressure level measuring equipment; and records were kept of the noise sources by means of systematized observation. The measurements were carried out before and after holding an educational program on noise reduction. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, means, standard deviation, analysis of variance (ANOVA), the t-test and a correlation test.
