Abstract

The prenatal care is an important tool for identifying risks to both mother and to the fetus, and feasible actions that result in the reduction of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Thus, policies that focus on pregnancy and childbirth, as the Policy for Integral Attention to Women's Health, which is part of the prenatal care, have remained on the agenda in Brazil since the 1980s. The prenatal adequate quantity, quality and timeliness and differentiated according to risk, creates a great potential to improve family health and is a clear example of disease prevention and health promotion. The prenatal care had great development in recent decades, especially in the coverage and other indicators, especially those proposed by the Program for Humanization of Prenatal Care and Birth (PHPN). Besides PHPN, other indices have been proposed to assess the quality prenatal care, as the Kessner index, which includes the months of the beginning of prenatal care and the total number of appointments, and Kotelchuck, which also includes the month of early prenatal care and the total number of consultations, but advances to propose weighting the number of visits for gestational age, creating categories of appropriateness of care given. This epidemiological study aims to evaluate the overall quality of prenatal care developed in Botucatu-SP, in the year 2012. Its specific objectives are: to describe the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics and perinatal outcome of pregnancies in women participating in the study, propose and implement quality score pre-natal and study the relationship between the score of quality pre-natal and maternal characteristics and the newly born. The analysis will focus on the assumptions of the National Obstetric, especially considering the PHPN Program and Pre-Natal Care of the State Secretariat of Health of São Paulo. For this purpose, secondary data will be used in development of extensive study in Botucatu which, in turn, provide an evaluation of the records of mothers and newborns during hospitalization for childbirth, prenatal card and books of the delivery room and nursery. It is estimated that approximately 1400 will be studied both mother and baby, deliveries in the period January 1 to June 30, 2012. (AU)
