Involuntary Head Motion during Magnetic Resonance Imaging exam in patients with Parkinson´s Disease

Abstract

Patients with Parkinson´s Disease (PD) present diskyisia and bradikynisia, limiting functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) exam. Our aim is to quantify the interference of head involuntary motion in PD brain activation during motor and language tasks. We will use data from different researches. One took place in Radiology Institute from University of São Paulo Medical School Clinical Hospital, from 2000 to 2002; with 10 patients presenting severe PD (36 to 79 y), and 8 healthy volunteers (36 to 75 y); MRI scan GE 1,5 T; producing 15 axial images of 100 brain volumes; during motor paradigm alternating finger tapping and rest, in block and event related designs, of right and left hand separately, with test-retest methodology. The other is in course since 2007, at Research and Teaching Institute from Albert Einstein Israeli Hospital; with 53 mild and moderated PD patients and 47 healthy volunteers; 3T Siemens MRI equipment, for 32 axial images; during language paradigm, consisting in three tasks: verbal fluency (129 brain volumes), decision (143 volumes) e vocalization (145 volumes). In both researches, there were constant recommendations for the subjects not to move, besides procedures to prevent head motion.The data analysis will use the XBAM register and motion correction response files, with degrees of rotation and translation in x, y, z axis, resulting 6 measurements for each slice. The patients and control groups measurements will be compared by Mann-Whitney statistics.
