Abstract Gauge field theory provides a universal setting for the description of the fundamental interactions. The concept of BRST symmetry allows to combine the study of classical and quantum properties of a gauge theory. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms provide two independent approaches to the BRST quantization of a gauge theory. Different realizations of BRST symmetry lead to new quantization schemes. This research project is aimed at the study of some general and applied aspects of gauge field theory in the framework of BRST symmetry: solution of master equations; problems of superfield quantization; investigation of physical unitarity, Ward identities and gauge dependence; correspondence between Lagrangian and Hamiltonian gauge algebras; quantization of models with reparametrization invariance and models of two-dimensional gravity.
