Abstract

In a gasoline internal combustion engine all pieces possess a foreseen useful life, being that duration larger or smaller, according to the specific function to them attributed. Each piece has its own life that, in normal conditions of operation of the whole set, assists the expectations. By oil analysis one can monitor the conditions of these pieces. The oil analysis technique is a type of predictive maintenance. It can be made collecting the oil of equipment and analyzing it later on or analyzing it directly in systems “on line ".The oil analysis allows to identify the first symptoms of a component wear. The identification is made starting from the study of the amount of particles, size, forms and composition that supplies precise information about the conditions of the surfaces in movement without the need of disassembling the set which these parts belong to. Such solid particles are generated by the dynamic friction among pieces in contact. According to the study of these particles one can link the wear situations of the set and attributes them the physical and chemical conditions. The oil analysis is made by means of laboratory techniques that involve reagent, instruments and equipments. Thus, to study the predictive maintenance in gasoline internal combustion engine, it will be made a theoretical study on this engine, on the lubricants, on the problems and associated possible causes of the faults of these, on the types of predictive maintenance applied to these and on works about predictive maintenance accomplished by other authors. To aid the studies it will be proposed the construction of a bench composed of an internal combustion engine, coupled to a load supplier through a reducer. It will be used the lubricant recommended by the manufacturer with and without liquid and solid pollutants. (AU)
