Abstract

Infections of the urinary tract are the most frequent of the hospital acquired infections. They represent 40% of these infections. In hospital, urinary catheters are the most important risk factor. From various studies it is known that urinary catheters are very much indicated and for too long period. This study intends to evaluate the use of urinary catheters in Marilia General Hospital, its associated consequences and management. It will be carried out a prospective cohort study in which all the clinical and surgical patients will be followed daily to verify the indication and duration of urinary catheters, the incidence of urinary infections, the frequency of asymptomatic bacteriuria and the use of antibiotics in these patients. Patients with hospital infections will be compared to others without them in order to determine risk factors. It will be carried out a descriptive analysis of the variables and comparative analyses among clinical and surgical patients and among those who developed complications and those who did not. Qui-square test will be performed to compare proportions and t-students to compare means. The study will be carried out in Marilia General Hospital, a tertiary hospital linked to Marilia Medical School, with 173 beds. Data will be collected during 8 months by two students; one of them will search after surgical patients and the other will look for clinical patients. This study aims at providing better care subsidized by objective data in this environment and it will gives information to a better education of the Nursing and Medicine students. (AU)
