Abstract

AIDS and the related diseases are still responsible for significant mortality, despite the progress already achieved. The use of antiretroviral therapy decreased opportunistic infections, increased life expectancy, and rates of hospitalization. However, some patients due to social or epidemiological characteristics, low treatment compliance, treatment failure or because they don't know their serological status, are still at risk for opportunistic infections. Furthermore patients on antiretroviral therapy are subject to non-infectious complications such as metabolic and cardiovascular. These patients presenting to the emergency department have became a challenger for the non-specialist physician to diagnose and decide about the initial treatment. The use of clinical guidelines and flowcharts have been useful tools for assist the take care to these patients, reducing the chances of error. Objective: To describe clinical and demographic variables of HIV- positive adult presenting at the emergency department (ED) of university affiliated hospital of Marilia Medical Scholl; to produce and disseminate clinical guidelines and flowcharts of main diagnosis. Methodology: Retrospective cohort study. Demographic, HIV clinical, and HIV lab variables will be abstracted from the medical records of HIV - positive adult cared for at ED in the period 2007-2009. It will also review the literature for the preparation of clinical guidelines and flowchart of major clinical syndromes. Meetings with physicians and residents from the ED of internal medicine will be held to disseminate the guidelines.
