Abstract

The Fraternity of Nossa Senhora do Rosário of Brack Men from São Paulo founded at the beginning of the 18th century and still in full activity nowadays, represents a strong nucleus of the black community in the heart of the old paulista capital city. To point out the role of these people during the formation of urban life in one of the biggest cities in the world, particularly, the identity and representation of the group before society is to give Afro-Brazilians the importance of strengtheners of the ethnic and cultural multiplicity from São Paulo. Therefore, this study aims to analyse how this unifying role played by the fraternity occurred in the paulistana society at the turn of the 19th century to the 20th century in the first years of the Brazilian Republic.
