Abstract

Europium chalcogenides are important magnetic semiconductors that have a potential for applications in spintronic devices. They share the common property of having a large magnetic moment at the lattice sites occupied by europium, and their magneto-optical properties can be described by the same semi-empirical model, albeit with different parameters. Here we propose to investigate PbEuTe epitaxial layers, grown by molecular beam epitaxy, to gather new experimental evidence that will improve our understanding of the electronic processes in these systems. The experiments that will be performed include time-resolved Faraday rotation, time-resolved photoluminescence and second harmonic generation. The research aims at detecting and controlling the electronic and lattice magnetism by the use of light. (AU)
